Muscular Dystrophy (MDA) needs Volunteers for summer camp

Posted about 7 years ago by Joan Zaccardi

Currently we are seeking nurses to volunteer at our annual week-long Summer Camps. If it is possible to share the opportunity below with the Association, that would be wonderful. I have also attached a document stating the responsibilities of a Volunteer Camp Nurse. If there is ever an opportunity to come speak with nurses, we would love to explain more about the volunteer opportunity.

As part of the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s mission to save and improve the lives of people fighting muscle disease, MDA provides a summer camp program for children ages 6-17 — offered at no cost to their families.

MDA summer camp opens up a world of possibilities and hope to kids with muscle disease who often experience limitations in life and daily activities. MDA summer camp is a magical place where anything is possible for these special kids, but MDA needs caring people to volunteer as camp medical staff to make this happen. Camp counselors serve as a “buddy” to all campers during the week and help the kids to participate in activities. But we also need registered nurses on campsite all week to ensure a safe and healthy week at camp.

This year, we will be hosting three camps for kids located in the Metro New York/New Jersey area, which will take place at the following locations and weeks. Since all of our camps will take place in New Jersey, all volunteer nurses must be licensed in NJ.

  • Camp Oakhurst in Oakhurst, NJ- August 5th through August 11th, 2017
  • Happiness is Camping in Hardwick, NJ- August 13th through August 19th, 2017
  • Happiness is Camping in Hardwick, NJ- August 20th through August 26th, 2017

This is a sleep away camp, so nurses are required to stay overnight. You will be provided with a bed in a nurses' cabin, and all food will be provided for the week.

We truly can’t do this without the help of caring individuals like you. If you are interested in volunteering, please refer to the attached PDF to explain more about the duties of a Camp Nurse. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

Camp is a place where a kid can truly be a kid and forget all limitations. With your help, we can make this possible!

Please reach out to Alyssa Keenan at akeenan@mdausa.org or by phone at 212-682-5272 with any questions or interest.

Please let me know if you would be able to share this information in helping us to recruit medical staff for our Summer Camps.

Thank you so much for your time,
