POSTED ON BEHALF OF METTA CAHILL, NJ Nurse Midwife, we are posting this timely information for your review, regarding reproductive health care services in NJ."
Hello to FNAP members,

I am a member of the legislative committee of the NJ Affiliate of the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNMNJ) and represent ACNMNJ on THRIVE NJ, a coalition of 80+ organizations which has been working together for a few years promoting progressive reproductive rights legislation in NJ.  I got your contact info from a midwife-colleague, Linda Locke.

As everyone on this email is aware, the NJ Board of Medical Examiners expanded the categories of healthcare providers who can render abortion services in NJ to include APNs, CNMs, CMs and PAs.  Each of our professional organizations has either settled the scope of practice issue inherent in this skill set for its members or is working on the issue presently.

The new challenge for all of us is gaining knowledge about the legal challenges inherent in provision of abortion service in the post-Roe era.  How do we continue to provide optimum services for our New Jersey clients as individuals from states which ban or restrict abortions cross the border seeking abortion services from us in New Jersey?  How do out-of-state abortion seekers, or those that assist them, best protect themselves?  What legal risks are inherent in providing abortion services to out-of-state individuals, and what risk mitigation strategies can I employ.

I think you will be relieved to know that a group of reproductive rights attorneys in NJ have been concentrating on that issue and are offering their legal guidance to all NJ non-MD providers pro-bono. These attorneys also man a free Reproductive Hotline available to abortion seekers, abortion helpers and abortion providers.   One of the attorneys, Catherine Weiss, from the Lowenstein and Sandler firm, spoke to the THRIVE NJ coalition and met separately with myself and several members of the New Jersey State Society for Physicians Assistants (NJSSPA).

Catherine's law firm has graciously offered to provide a free 90-minute Zoom webinar to interested members of both of our organizations, ACNMNJ and NJSSPA, to explain the legal risks in reproductive care and provide risk-mitigation strategies.  The Zoom webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13th, 7 pm to 8:30 PM EST.  Preregistration will be required but there will be no fee and no CEUs granted.  Catherine's law firm is creating a flyer that we can use for distribution.

Please let me know if you would like to be included.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out.  I am adding the invitation to the ZOOM webinar which I hope you will send to your membership.

Best,
